Recent amendment of EU regulations will mean that anyone wishing to use a home teeth whitening kit without recourse to a dentist will be restricted either to a traditional peroxide kit of no more than a minimal concentration (releasing a maximum of 0.1% hydrogen peroxide), which is most likely to be ineffective, or instead to purchase a non-peroxide based kit. Here we are reviewing one of these, namely Botanical White, available to buy online from www.BotanicalWhite.co.uk.
The makers claim effective whitening within 14 days using natural ingredients with no risks of adverse side effects. The ingredients are listed as:
- Sodium bicarbonate as the main active ingredient in concentrated form
- Pomegranate (Punica Granatum) extract
- Aloe Vera
- Chamomile extract
- Vitamin D (Ergocalciferol)
The kit contains sufficient gel for 100 treatments, has customisable mouth trays, plus full instructions. Optional extras are a special blue light to help speed up the whitening process, and remineralisation gel to help strengthen tooth enamel.
Advantages:
- Sodium bicarbonate is recognised as a natural substance with good cleaning and whitening properties. It is very safe to use in the mouth, being much the same as normal baking soda. The foaming on the tooth surface helps clean and remove superficial stains while the active oxygen released permeates the enamel and neutralises discolouration inside the teeth by chemical oxidation.
- Sodium bicarbonate and all the other ingredients used in Botanical White are safe and free from the problems with peroxide gels such as burning of the mouth if excess spills out of the mouth trays, or increased sensitivity of the teeth after treatment. The latter makes this product ideal for those who already have somewhat sensitive teeth.
- The kit is comprehensive and easy to use.
- The kit is good value for money, being less expensive than some alternative non-peroxide products.
- The product has a shelf life of up to a year.
- There are many satisfied users and testimonials to that effect.
Disadvantages:
- The actual bleaching effect is likely to be somewhat less than that achieved with peroxide kits but these are already being phased out across Europe and will soon no longer be available. An adequate concentration of sodium bicarbonate is likely to give a noticeable improvement in teeth colour if used according to the instructions and for sufficient time. The claim of noticeable whitening within 14 days is quite reasonable.
- The kit doesn’t give much information on how easy the “warm and form” mouth trays are to customise, and although they would not be as close fitting as trays made by a dentist they would be adequate. A close fit is not essential with this system since any overspill would not cause any irritation of the mouth lining or gums like peroxide would.
- There is the option to include with the purchase of the kit a special blue light to help speed up the whitening process, but there is little objective evidence to support the claim that this does really happen with sodium bicarbonate gels. It is difficult to see also, how much light could penetrate through the trays to the gel unless the trays are fairly transparent.
- The accompanying ingredients in the product such as Pomegranate and Aloe Vera are certainly harmless but may not have very much positive effect in low concentrations and topically applied.
Verdict:
Botanical White is a good, safe product for anyone to use to whiten their teeth. It may take a little longer to achieve significant whitening than previously popular peroxide kits but it more than makes up for that by being easy to use and non-irritating to teeth or gums. The system is certainly recommended and is represents good value for money.
