Peroxide kits for home teeth whitening, utilising either hydrogen or carbamide peroxide, have been available for some years now and have proved themselves to be very effective, usually achieving results comparable to those obtained by going to a dentist for whitening treatment, but at much less cost.
Most peroxide-based teeth whitening kits use a bleaching gel formulation of carbamide peroxide, usually by placing it in a plastic mouth tray that fits over the teeth of one jaw at a time, bathing the teeth for a period of time each day for about two to three weeks in all. Some kits say that only 30 minutes exposure per day is necessary, but it is usually best to leave the gel in contact with the teeth for between 1-3 hours a day. This is not usually a problem, and some people leave the tray in overnight.
The strength of the gel can vary from about 10% to over 30% but dentists generally agree that 15-17% is the optimum for most people. A gel of higher than 20% strength is likely to provoke increased sensitivity of the teeth for a while in some cases, whilst a concentration of less than 10% is not really adequate.
Peroxide gel is generally agreed to be the best way to whiten teeth and is perfectly safe for home use providing it is used sensibly as per the instructions.
